Projects

My Web Based Learning Activity (WBLA) was written for my fourth grade class for Social Studies while studying Africa and consists of the African Webquest that explores the African Desert, Savannah, and Rainforest. This web-based activity includes an online quiz on the learning objectives of the activity and an online survey at the end that provides me with data on what the students thought of the activity and a self-assessment of how they worked during the activity.

My Action Research Project was a study of the effectiveness of PowerPoint software for my fourth grade students. It probes their attitudes and confidence regarding public speaking. I wanted to research whether PowerPoint could be an effective tool for improving student achievement of proficiency according to state and district standards and curriculum for public speaking. It is also relevant for schools making a decision about whether money should be spent on technology as it investigates whether technology is effective in improving student achievement.

During my internship, I created my own classroom website using SchoolCenter software provided by the Jefferson County School District. I received training from the district and created a written job aid for other teachers. I created a survey for other teachers and me to use to assess the feelings and needs of the parents in their classrooms. I made a presentation to the staff followed by small group and individual sessions. I remain available to help any teacher who requests it. I made sure to honor the voluntary nature of the activity, but many teachers were willing to do the work of creating their own classroom websites.

As a member of the Shelton Elementary Technology Committee I've taken part in decisions concerning technology use in our building. I wrote this analysis responding to guiding questions written by Stevan Kalmon. The Shelton Elementary 5-year plan that was analyzed is preserved as a PowerPoint presentation linked below and there was also a summary or reflection written at the end of the plan. I will be participating in the creation of the new technology plan as a member of the technology committee.

I created a plan and a video job aid using Captivate software for our fourth grade classrooms to use in small groups to create a PowerPoint presentation. I collaborated with two other fourth grade teachers and all the students presented to a large audience of all three classrooms and visiting parents. The job aid, though rather large, was made available on a webpage, on the school fileserver, and I also placed it on flash drives as a backup. Students could view the video on one computers in the lab, enabling them to use the controls to fast forward or back, and pause while creating their PowerPoint presentation on a second computer. They were able to work independently at their own speed to create their presentation.
